Lady Gaga’s latest single is on the way, and Little Monsters should thank Top Gun: Maverick for that. Gaga confirmed on Wednesday that the soundtrack’s opening song, “Hold My Hand,” would be released on May 3.

The singer announced the song’s release on Instagram, along with song art and a message expressing her “love letter to the world.” Lady Gaga added that she has “been working on it for years” in order to perfect it and “make it ours” amid this trying time for the planet.

“When I wrote this song for Top Gun: Maverick, I didn’t even realize the multiple layers it spanned across the film’s heart, my own psyche, and the nature of the world we’ve been living in,” she shared. “I wanted to make music into a song where we share our deep need to both be understood and try to understand each other — a longing to be close when we feel so far away and an ability to celebrate life’s heroes.”

The song, which was co-produced by Lady Gaga and BloodPop, is set to be included in the film’s soundtrack, which is composed by Harold Faltermeyer and Hans Zimmer.

“Me, BloodPop, Ben Rice and everyone else who worked on it with us are so excited to share it with you,” she continued before concluding the message with song lyrics. “🎶 But if you decide to; I’ll ride in this life with you; I won’t let go till the end 🎶.”

The song is Gaga’s first release after her collaboration with Tony Bennett on Love for Sale. It’s also her first foray into music soundtracks since co-starring in A Star Is Born and winning an Academy Award for “Shallow” alongside Bradley Cooper.

Gaga has been tweeting the song’s lyrics as a tease for a few days now. “Hold my hand everything will be ok  I heard from the heavens that clouds have been grey,” she tweeted on Tuesday. She went on to tweet, “Pull me close wrap me in your aching arms I see that you’re hurtin’” and “Why’d you take so long to tell me you need me.”

The single will be a musical homage to the original Top Gun soundtrack, which included ’80s mega-hits like Kenny Logins’ Danger Zone and Berlin’s Oscar-winning “Take My Breath Away,” produced by Giorgio Moroder and writer Tom Whitlock and performed by Berlin. It will also feature the Harold Faltermeyer-penned “Top Gun Anthem.”
