In a recent episode of The Zach Feldman Show, host Zach Feldman welcomed Matthew Kenslow, a passionate advocate for Autism awareness, inclusion, and kindness. Kenslow, who has turned personal challenges into an inspirational journey, shared insights into his latest book, Unstoppable, his experiences as an educator, and his mission to empower others through school assemblies and social media.
Kenslow began by addressing what drives his advocacy. “Living with Autism, I’ve faced misunderstandings and bullying since Kindergarten,” he explained. “But over time, I realized these challenges could become opportunities to raise awareness, inspire change, and promote inclusion.”
His second book, Unstoppable, delves deep into this transformation. It chronicles his path from enduring discrimination to becoming a sought-after substitute teacher known for his unique ability to connect with students. “In the classroom, students often tell me I’m the best substitute teacher they’ve ever had,” he shared with pride. “Hearing that validates my mission and shows me how impactful understanding and kindness can be.”
Kenslow described Autism as a neurological difference, not a limitation. “Autism is about perceiving and interacting with the world differently,” he explained. “The challenges can be daunting—social misunderstandings, sensory sensitivities, and sometimes feeling isolated—but they don’t define our potential.”
He emphasized the role education played in his journey. “In school and college, understanding teachers and programs tailored for different learning styles made a huge difference for me,” he said. “They gave me the confidence to overcome obstacles and focus on my strengths, like teaching and public speaking.”
Kenslow revealed that his time as a student teacher was a learning experience for both himself and his students. “The credential program was rigorous, but it taught me the importance of patience and adaptability,” he said. “Student teaching allowed me to combine my passion for education with my advocacy for acceptance.”
His work as a substitute teacher continues to leave a lasting impression. “It’s amazing to walk into a classroom and feel welcomed by students who are excited to see me,” Kenslow said. “Parents and staff have also been incredibly supportive. They see me not just as someone with Autism but as someone making a difference in students’ lives.”
Beyond the classroom, Kenslow reaches thousands through his school assemblies and social media platforms. His assemblies blend juggling, sleight-of-hand, and science to engage and educate students about the importance of kindness and inclusion. “I’ve spoken to over 10,000 students across Orange County so far,” he shared. “One of the greatest compliments is hearing that my assembly was the first thing students told their parents about after school.”
On platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, Kenslow shares moments of encouragement and insight. “Social media allows me to connect with a broader audience,” he explained. “The reception has been overwhelmingly positive, which shows how much people want to learn about Autism and support inclusion.”
Kenslow also addressed misconceptions about Autism. “One of the biggest myths is that Autism limits success,” he said. “People with Autism can achieve incredible things with the right support and understanding.”
His advice to others, particularly those with disabilities, is simple yet powerful: “Focus on your strengths and passions. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and don’t let anyone’s doubts define your path.”
Looking ahead, Kenslow has big plans. “I want to continue advocating, teaching, and speaking to larger audiences. My goal is to reach a half million students with my assemblies and inspire others to embrace kindness and inclusion in their daily lives.”
Matthew Kenslow’s journey is one of resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Through his book Unstoppable, his work as an educator, and his advocacy efforts, he’s proving that differences can be strengths and challenges can be stepping stones to greatness.
